Yan Dhanda pens a professional contract with Liverpool
Yan Dhanda has made the headlines by being the first player of Indian heritage to sign a professional contract with the Anfield club.
The 17-year-old joined the Liverpool academy from West Brom in July 2013 for a meagre compensation fee of £200,000 . He has also represented England at under-16 and under-17 level.
Dhanda is probably the third British Indian player to play for a top-flight club after Neil Taylor and Michael Chopra. Taylor's mother is an Indian and comes from Kolkata whereas Chopra's father is an Indian.
Liverpool have secured his services until 2018 by offering him a two-and-a-half-year deal. The U-18 starlet won the 'up-and-coming player' award at the Asian Football Awards in 2013.
Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre has mentioned that being Asian had nothing to do with the contract. Dhanda was offered a contract because the club believes that he can compete for a place in the first team.
