Did Gerard Pique deliberately pick up ban with Arsenal yellow card? |
Arsenal have a mammoth task of scoring at least 2 goals at the Catalans' home which seems very far-fetched, which is why Pique is being accused of deliberately picking up that yellow. What fueled this accusation was that the Spanish defender had a small chat with manager Luis Enrique just minutes before the tackle that earned him the yellow card.
In 2010, a similar incident took place involving Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid. The Portuguese was found guilty of making Ramos and Alonso pick up deliberate red cards so that they miss the meaningless final group match against Auxerre and enter the knockout stages with a clean disciplinary record.
The only difference in the two incidents is that Mourinho, Ramos and Alonso were charged by UEFA whereas Pique and Enrique escaped the repercussions. On being asked about this accusation, Luis Enrique said that the yellow was not deliberate and that pique had to make that foul.
In the earlier incident, UEFA took action after seeing the match referee's report, but in this case, he wasn't convinced.
