Argentina 1-0 Switzerland: Match report

Di María was the hero as Argentina edged Switzerland in extra time

Angel Di Maria scored a very late extra time goal to send Argentina through to the quarter finals of the World Cup for the third consecutive tournament.

The 118th minute goal broke the hearts of the Swiss fans who had watched their team play very well throughout the match. In the first 90 minutes the game was very close although Switzerland seemed to have the better chances during the first half. Argentina had the better chances in the second half though. Overall the first 90 minutes wasn't great for either set of spectators; all they had to look forward to wad extra time.

Argentina seemed to donate a dull extra time period but the game came alive 2 minutes from time when Di Maria's low shot nestled into the cornet off the net. With only minute left Switzerland didn't look out of it, a header from Dzemali hit the post very late on.
It was Argentina who triumphed in the end to set up a quarter final time with either Belgium or the USA.

I predicted an Argentina win in my predictions (read them here). It wasn't as comfortable a win as I predicted but it was still a win that put Argentina into the World Cup quarter finals. This result mean that so far 6/7 of my predictions have been correct!
