Arsenal are now close to making a fourth signing this summer, and it's not even August yet! Arsenal have been linked with yet another defender and according to the BBC and Sky the gunners are close to signing Callum Chambers. In this post, the young defender will be profiled to see if his potential move is a good one for Arsenal.
Who is he?
Callum Chambers is a 19 year old right back who plays for Southampton. After graduating from Southampton's youth system, he was promoted to the first team in 2012. He made his league debut against West Brom on the first day of the 2013-14 season. He made 21 league appearances for Southampton last season, predominantly in right back, but he can also play centre back, and he challenged Clyne for the first team spot. Chambers has also made 18 appearances for the England U19s, scoring 2 goals in the process.
Why is he an important signing?
Chambers will provide back up for Debuchy and, as he can play as a centre back, he may also provide squad depth in that position. Chambers is young and adaptable, so Wenger may adapt him into a centre back, this will mean that Arsenal can keep Jenkinson as well. Luke Shaw had a similar breakthrough season during 2012-13,like the season Chambers had this year. If Chambers had a similar season to Luke Shaw's 2013-14 season this year, and he hadn't left Southampton, then his price may have doubled. Wenger bought him early to stop his price increasing by this time next year.
Any drawbacks?
The first disadvantage would be that Chambers seems to be a direct replacement for Jenkinson. Jenkinson has progressed well at Arsenal and has become a popular player among the fans. He's a boyhood Arsenal fan and has a huge amount of passion for the club. It would be sad to see Jenkinson go, but he has only been linked with loan moves away, so his departure may not be permanent. Also, although Chambers has a huge amount of potential it could be said that the transfer fee, said to be £16 million is a bit overpriced.
