Is Debuchy a good signing for Arsenal?

Mathieu Debuchy- a profile of the Arsenal target

Mathieu Debuchy in action for Newcastle United

Away from the drama of the World Cup, Arsenal have made developments regarding transfers. One of these is that they are reportedly close to signing Newcastle right-back Mathieu Debuchy. The 28 year old Frenchman would be a like for like replacement for Bacary Sagna, who has left Arsenal to join Manchester City. But how much is known about him? In this article I will be profiling this player who may soon be playing in the red and white jersey.

Who is he?
Mathieu Debuchy started his professional career at Lille, where he spent 10 years, playing 233 games and scoring 16 goals for the club. He was a part of Lille's 2010-11 double winning side that also included Gervinho and Eden Hazard. He also has some experience playing in European competitions with the French side. In January 2013 he moved to Newcastle for a fee of about £5.5 million. He has made 43 appearances in his 18 months for the Tyneside team and he has scored a goal in the process. Debuchy also has 25 caps for France and started all their matches during this year’s World Cup. He has scored 2 goals for his national team.

Why is he an important signing?
Firstly, Debuchy would perfectly fit the place Sagna has left behind in Arsenal's defence and would be a great replacement. He plays like Sagna in his both defensive and attacking responsibilities and, like Sagna, he wins a lot of aerial duels.  Also, unlike some of Arsenal's other transfer target (mainly Aurier), Debuchy has experience in the Premier League and in Europe. Debuchy is also cheaper than some of Arsenal's other transfer targets were with some people saying that a potential fee for Debuchy could have been half a fee for Aurier. Debuchy will most likely play week in week out for quite a few seasons to come.

Any drawbacks?
One of the negative aspects of a potential Debuchy transfer is his age. He's 28 now and he'll be 29 by the time the season starts in August. He's only 2 years younger than Sagna. This may be a good thing as he has experience, but in 3 or 4 years he may need to be replaced. By this time Carl Jenkinson may have matured into a great player or another young star may be at Arsenal. If not, Arsenal will need to shell out a lot of money quite early. Also, he isn't a typical Wenger signing. I think that a Wenger signing is usually young and someone that will mature into a great player. Although Debuchy doesn't fit this, I think that he'll be a great signing.
