Manchester United have reportedly agreed a fee of £69.3million with Real Madrid for Angel Di Maria. Contract negotiations and a medical test are yet to have taken place, but with the Argentine midfielder reportedly interested with a move to Old Trafford, it looks quite likely the deal will be completed.
If this deal is fully completed, it would be a British transfer record, beating the £50million Chelsea spent on Fernando Torres.
The question is, is Di Maria really worth that much? Is he worth being the most expensive player in Britain? When you consider Balotelli has all but signed for Liverpool for a mere £16million, you wouldn't expect Di Maria to be worth much more than that!?
Personally, I think this transfer price is down to desperation on Manchester United's part. Just looking at this stat shows why they can be frustrated after their transfer window so far:
Man. United: Shaw, Herrera, Rojo - £76million
Liverpool: Moreno, Lambert, Lovren, Manquillo, Can, Balotelli, Marković - £72million
Manchester United are clearly frustrated after their transfer window (and are so desperate to sign someone) that they are willing to overpay!
Angel Di Maria signed for Real Madrid for just £20million from Benfica. If they were to sell him on for over £60million, they would be making one massive profit.
Last season, Di Maria played 2377 minutes in a Real Madrid shirt, scoring only 4 goals. However, he did get a huge 17 assists, which was enough to top the assist charts in La Liga.
He does have a knack of being involved in important goals, as he scored one in the 2-1 Copa del Rey victory over Barcelona. He also had a shot saved by Thibaut Courtois in the final of the Champions League that Gareth Bale managed to score the rebound of.
The reason Di Maria didn't score too many goals last season was partly because he was playing a slightly deeper role for a large part of the season. He was playing in central midfield alongside Modrić and Alonso. If he was to play in this position for the Red Devils, it would really help their central midfield crisis.
Also, Di Maria would probably form a brilliant partnership with Juan Mata. If this was to take place, the only way would be up for Manchester United.
In conclusion, Di Maria would be useful in a Man. United shirt, but he is not really worth that MASSIVE £63.9million price tag.
