Out of Europe, out of ideas and out of sorts, many saw the Manchester giants in an unfamiliar position. Well how the mood has changed at Old Trafford. There have been some notable changes as the club as fortunes have slowly turned for the good. From the home defeat to Swansea, to the 4-0 drubbing at the hands of MK Dons we are here. A comprehensive blow out of last years' Premier league runner ups Liverpool. United sit third and just eight points behind league leaders Chelsea. Traditionally Manchester United get stronger in this period going into January and here are three reasons why they must be considered title contenders:

Momentum
Six wins in a row. The last time United managed this was under Sir Alex Ferguson. Unconvincing play, some would say. Well 18 points is convincing. The Red devils are rampant and are as accurate in front of goal as anyone. In their last three clashes have managed to be dominated in the shots on target, possession and chances created department but seem to come out on top. Albeit comfortably. They enter the festive season with momentum and without any European distractions as they look to not just claim fourth but win the league. Can they do it? Why not? They focusing on one game a week, or two every other week with the FA Cup set to commence in January. The side is buzzing with confidence and showing some rhythm. The Manchester United of old has returned.

Philosophy and injuries
Louis van Gaal has used a number of formations this year. As time has gone by the side has adapted well and managed to effectively use them efficiently in each game. United, may be compounded by injuries but continue to pinch points. They have managed to contain the league's most potent attack and have grabbed vital goals showing their efficiency in front of goal. Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia deserve mention for adapting as quality wing backs. Competent at the back and effective on attack: Tactical master class. The return of key players will further boost this side. Will Radamel Falcao produce his best for the Manchester club, as injuries limit his impact; Angel di Maria needs to return with his quality and a fully fit side will be hard to stop.

David de Gea
The best in the league! The Spaniard has managed to mask the weaknesses in United's defense as he has made save after save to deny opposition a sniff. A career that started poorly at United has drastically changed with work on his core strength, decision making and work on high balls and crosses. Whether United will tie him down on a long term deal is yet to be seen. He keeps his form, United will surely be contenders.
