4. Mathieu Flamini
The Frenchman re-joined Arsenal for the 2013/14 season but he had an earlier stint from 2004-2008 which arguably should have never ended. It can be easily believed that Flamini would have been better sticking around with the Gunners: his final season with the Premier League club was by far his best as he displaced Gilberto Silva, the so-called ‘Invisible Wall’, to earn the middle of the park on the starting team.
Despite a very successful season at The Emirates stadium, Flamini could not resist the charms of Italian powerhouse AC Milan. Flamini did prove useful in Milan’s Serie A title win in 2010/11 but he was generally considered to be the second choice to club captain Massimo Ambrosini. Flamini often struggled to start and tended to function as a utility player.
A lack of regular football resulted in Flamini’s return to Arsenal in August 2014 and there was a distinct feeling that he would have been better served staying there. Gunners had been lacking a defensive midfielder during the 31-years-old’s hiatus from the club and the Frenchman’s skill would certainly have been more valued by Wenger than in Milan.
Flamini was an important part in what was a fairly successful 2013/14 for Arsenal, even scoring a vital goal to seal a draw against League Champions Manchester City.
