Krul injury sends Newcastle United into goalkeeper crisis

Tim Krul has been ruled out for the entire season after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligaments while on international duty. The 27 year old suffered the injury while playing for Holland against Kazakhstan in the Euro qualifier on Saturday.

As was initially feared, the club later confirmed the extent of the injury. Krul is one of the longest serving players currently at Newcastle United, and has 184 appearances to his name till date. Although he has not been in great form this season, losing their first choice goalkeeper will be a massive blow for the Tyneside club.

To add to Steve McClaren's headaches, Second choice goalkeeper Karl Darlow is also out injured. This means, third choice Rob Elliot will have to deputize for them. With a massive game against rivals Sunderland coming up later this month, losing his best two goalkeepers will worry McClaren.

18 year old Freddie Woodmann has been immediately recalled from League Two side Crawley, where he was on loan, to provide cover for the current situation.

Newcastle have been struggling very badly in the league so far and lie bottom of the table with no wins yet after eight games. With the team under performing, the loss of Krul will further hinder their hopes of any comeback.

Krul has now returned to the club for further treatment and rehabilitation.
