Ozil shines as Arsenal overcome Everton

Arsenal beat Everton 2-1 to go to the top of the Premier League table on Saturday. Goals from Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny were enough for the gunners to overcome the threat of Everton.

Everton came and sat deep in the early stages of the game, happy to give Arsenal possession. After their 3-0 dismantling at Manchester United last week, they did not want another horror defence showing. Arsenal kept the ball but found it tough to unlock the Everton defence in the initial moments.

Galloway and Stones were brilliant in the opening stages and just kept passing the ball around the opposition area and it looked like Arsenal would fail to break down the defence. Up stepped Mesut Ozil who delivered a pin point cross to Olivier Giroud who was just left with the job of nodding the ball past Tim Howard.

Everton were still recovering from the shock of conceding that goal when Santi Cazorla set up Laurent Koscielny to head home a second time within two minutes. It looked as if it was going to be an easy win for the Gunners but Ross Barkley brought Everton right back in to the game with a shot that deflected off Gabriel and entered the net.

The second half was a very even contest with Lukaku hitting the bar and Deulofeu testing Petr Cech and Giroud and Ozil hitting the woodwork at the other end. It could have gone either way at the end but credit to Arsenal for holding firm to deny Everton's attackers.

Much credit needs to be given to Mesut Ozil who set up Arsenal's first goal and ran the show thereafter. He was at the centre of every Arsenal move and was involved heavily in the game. His movement on and off the ball was a treat to watch, as he glided past defenders with ease.

He created a couple more good chances but Arsenal couldn't score more. This capped of a wonderful couple of weeks for the German where he put in some superb performances against the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester United. He finally looks like he is entering his 'Golden age' as suggested by Wenger earlier this week.
