Tottenham: Top Four or Title?

It is quite easy to underestimate the importance of Tottenham's win against West Ham with the headlines being devoted to the thrashing of former league leaders Manchester City by Liverpool. Ironically, Tottenham is the only other team who can boast of a similar record against Manchester City this season.

Tottenham team
In a season where most of the title challengers have really not been convincing, securing a Champions League spot should be regarded as a bare minimum for Tottenham. One of the main reasons for this optimism at White Hart Lane would be the fact that this team of Tottenham can actually be regarded as a whole rather than just sum of its parts. The Harry Redknapp squad relied more on the brilliance of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric at times. However the current squad can quite comfortably afford an off day for one or two of their influential players with minimal impact.

They are never over reliant on someone and that could be considered a good sign in the long run. Harry Kane was having a slow start to the season until the last 5 games wherein he scored 8 goals. Dembele has been a revelation under Pochettino this season. Dier and Alli have formed an excellent midfield partnership and Lamela looks like he is finally justifying his price tag. It can be argued that West Ham missed their most influential player in Payet in the last game but so did Tottenham who missed one of their key players in Lamela.

Most importantly, this is a very young and hungry Tottenham squad and you feel that the form can be sustainable. When you consider that the likes of Dembele, Lloris and Vertonghen form the senior members of the squad with the other influential members like Kane, Dier, Eriksen and Alli all below the age of 23, it can be believed that this team has a great future under the perfect manager.

It may still be a little early to consider Tottenham as one of the title contenders and their manager Pochettino was right in calming down the situation by saying the squad is very young and titles are not won by such a young squad. But it does not mean that they cannot dream. It is important that Tottenham believe that this is the season where they can actually topple their fierce rivals Arsenal and claim the North London supremacy in the perfect way.
