In the biggest news of the footballing world, Chelsea have sacked Jose Mourinho, the most successful manager in their history, for the second time.
The fact that their season went from bad to worse after two back to back defeats in the premier league surely made Abramovich to take due course of action. Chelsea are currently just one point above the relegation zone with the only silver lining being their qualification to the knock out stages of the Champions League.
It certainly was not surprising, given the club was in such a big disarray. However, the signing of a new four year contract at the end of last season, a lack of a top class manager as a backup and a huge pay off gave a feeling that Abramovich may at least wait till the end of the season to make a decision.
Although not all Chelsea fans would be happy with the decision, unlike in other cases, Mourinho was certainly given enough time to change the fortunes of the team. Perhaps, the reports of unhappiness within the squad may have forced the hand for the owner. The most recent report of Mourinho feeling betrayed by some of his players just compounded the existing problems.
The club has officially released a statement thanking Mourinho for his wonderful job at the club and has been emphasizing the fact that the manager left on good terms. Chelsea have delayed further comments until the decision is made on their new manager. There are reports of Guardiola, former Tottenham manager Juande Ramos, Diego Simeone and former Chelsea manager Ancelotti being considered for the job.
However, Dutch manager Guus Hiddink is the favorite to rejoin the club he formerly managed in 2009 due to his close association with the owner and his previous exploits with the club in which he led them to a famous FA cup victory.
