Is Chelsea right in not extending the contract of John Terry?

John Terry has confirmed that he would not be given a new contract by Chelsea and would be allowed to leave at the end of the season. Terry stated that the decision was made by the Board after the Arsenal match and also expressed his disappointment at not being able to retire at the club.

John Terry to leave Chelsea as one of the club’s toughest and best
Terry has been one of the few academy products of Chelsea having joined at the age of 14. The former England captain has made almost 700 appearances for the club. Chelsea have seen several of their key players leave the club in recent seasons. Didier Drogba left the club in 2012 only to return in 2014 after which he left again in 2015 along with Petr Cech.

Frank Lampard had to leave the club as well when his contract was not renewed in 2014. This season would most probably see the departure of Terry as well. Fans have been upset about the decision of the board in letting the club's most distinguished player leave.

The club had an option of extending his contract by a year and making Terry to be more of a bit part player where he could part his experience to the likes of Zouma. Earlier in the season, Drogba emphasized the influence of experience players in the dressing room and Terry is, without a doubt, one of them.

The club would be looking at a different path, as Terry mentioned, with Chelsea regularly being linked with defenders. Varane and Stones are names that have been associated with them in the recent past. Clubs like United still have the likes of Giggs with Gary Neville and Paul Scholes allowed to retire at the club itself. However, even Liverpool had to let Steven Gerrard go.

It would be wrong to criticize the club who have supported Terry, who has been involved in various rows in the past. The fact that the club has left the decision to the new manager also points to the fact that the club wants to respect the decision of the new boss and Terry may still have a future at the club. After all, no player is bigger than the club.
