The transfer window is close to closing and Arsenal have been linked to making a late deal. The fans have been desperate for a striker all window and even more so since the Olivier Giroud for injured against Everton.
Who is he?
Danny Welbeck is a 23 year old English striker currently playing for Manchester United. He has spent his whole career at the Red Devils, although he has had two spells on loan, at Preston and Sunderland. During his loan spell at Preston he scored 2 goals in 8 league games. During his spell at Sunderland he scored 6 goals in 26 league games. At Manchester United he has scored 20 goals in 90 league games. He is also a regular in the English national team, scoring 8 goals in his 26 senior appearances and representing England at all levels from U17.
Why is he a good signing?
The signing of Welbeck is a permanent move and therefore would help solve Arsenal's striking problem, seeing as Giroud is injured. Welbeck is better than Sanogo, which means he is a step forward for Arsenal. Also he is currently on the same situation as Sturridge was in at Chelsea. A young English striker needing more playing time. If he turns out like Sturridge is a different question though. Welbeck also still has time on his side and if he stays on a permanent deal then may could mature into a great player.
Any drawbacks?
He isn't that world class striker that Arsenal need to challenge for the title, let alone win it. When you look at the other teams who are challenging for the title, they all have better strikers than Danny Welbeck. To be perfectly honest Danny Welbeck will not fire Arsenal to the title, but he may help consolidate a top four place. There is nothing wrong with the signing of Danny Welbeck although it seems to be a little bit of a panic buy. Compared to all the players that Arsenal have been linked with Welbeck isn't great. Also the deal seems quite overpriced, an estimated £16 million, but it is deadline day and Welbeck is signing from one of our direct rivals and he is English and English players are always a little overpriced. Is Welbeck a better player than Giroud though? This is the dilemma Arsene Wenger may face after new year.
