No Messi, no Neymar and no Rakitic. That is how Barcelona
lined up at the San Sebastian. A line up that was puzzling considering it was
the first game after a long break, Real Madrid's slip up and an opportunity to
go top. The game started off lively with Jordi Alba scoring a sensational own
goal which gave the hosts a lead. It stayed that way too.
Jokes on Twitter got viral as David Moyes' Real Sociedad defeated FC Barcelona |
From scoring the goal, Real Sociedad rarely saw the ball.
Barcelona attacked, and attacked. The Catalan giants laid siege at the home
goal but it yielded no fruits. Sociedad had chances to increase their lead but
poor finishing and decision making in the final third cost them. The
introduction of Messi and Neymar in the second half was of no benefit as the
defensive organization of David Moyes' side was exceptional, a tactical master
class.
This loss adds more pressure to the Barcelona mentor Luis
Enrique, whose side continues to look like a lost sheep. Could he be in awe of
the caliber of players he has? The Catalan giants have lacked synchrony since
their humbling defeat to Real Madrid. The attacking trio of Leo Messi, Neymar
and Luis Suarez is not potent as a unit.
They continue to blow hot and cold with individualistic brilliance
instead of showing cohesion.
A tale of two men who could have similar story endings:
Managing clubs that may have been too big for them, or one getting time to do
his magic while the other was cut off too early. A fourth win in five for Real
Sociedad against Barcelona as they now boast beating La Liga's big three of
Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Today, we say take a bow David
Moyes. Real Sociedad displayed one of the most impressive defensive showings in
the season in all of Europe. Third win in eight for Moyes, four draws and the
solitary defeat. The British manager looks at home in Spain.
