United boss Louis van Gaal is now planning to step-up his efforts to land alternative targets Nicolas Otamendi or Diego Godin after German defender Mats Hummels has reportedly rejected a £30m move to Manchester United.
United have been chasing the Borussia Dortmund defender for more than 12 months and missing out on Hummels could prove to be a huge blow to them.
The 26-years-old has been offered a lucrative deal to join United and has spent the last four months mulling over his future.
But Michael Zorc, Dortmund sporting director, insists Hummels has decided to remain with the Bundesliga outfit instead.
Zorc said that it was fair enough that Mats gave it some thought but he has always pointed out that he is firmly part of our plans."
United boss seems desperate to strengthen his defence and is planning to off-load the likes of Jonny Evans and Rafael Da Silva this summer.
