Liverpool are looking to swoop in and sign Spanish goalkeeper Victor Valdes from Manchester United.
Liverpool were keen to sign Valdes after he was released by Barcelona earlier but the goalkeeper chose to play for Van Gaal's side instead. But things did not go out as planned for Valdes and he was kept on the bench for most of the previous season due to De Gea's brilliant form.
Valdes had a bust up with Van Gaal when he refused to play for Manchester United's reserves and Van Gaal subsequently bought Sergio Romero, thereby demoting Valdes to ending up as United's third choice.
The 33 year old is unlikely to start for Manchester United under Van Gaal again and will reportedly listen to any offers that come his way.
Liverpool had bought Adam Bogdan as their backup goalkeeper in the summer but are now rumored to be interested in signing Valdes. The arrival of Valdes could provide competition for Simon Mignolet. Valdes is more likely to get playing time at Liverpool.
It is rumored that Chelsea is also interested in a move since their first choice keeper Cortouis is out injured.
