Real Madrid, Barcelona and Eibar have pledged their support and aid to the thousands of Syrian refugees arriving at the doors of European countries this year.

The United Nations' refugee agency, UNHCR, estimates that around 366,402 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean Sea to enter Europe this year, with 2,800 dead or missing.

An official statement from Real Madrid confirmed that the club would donate €1 million to provide aid for the hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who have been forced to leave their homes because of war and tragedy.

It is understood that club president Florentino Perez has discussed the financial arrangements and other measures intended to help the refugees arriving in Spain with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Real Madrid will also make some of their facilities available to the government organisations in charge of overseeing the reception of the refugees.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are expected to hold a club meeting in the coming days to discuss a project entailing a sizable donation for the migrants.

“This kind of thing should be unthinkable in the 21st century,” wrote Lionel Messi, a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, on his Facebook page.

“We are concerned about the situation of thousands of refugees arriving in Europe every day as a result of the war. We join the whole international community in calling for a rapid solution to this tragedy. #LeoMessiFoundation #ChooseToBelieve,” he added.

Eibar will donate €5 from each ticket sold from their La Liga game against Atletico Madrid next week to the UNHCR.
