Will La Liga be without Barcelona?

LFP president Javier Tebas has confirmed that Barcelona will not be able to participate in La Liga if Catalunya gets independent from Spain. Spain's sports minister Miguel Cardinal had also indicated the same last week when talking about the issue.

If Barcelona are not part of La Liga, then they would see a significant reduction in their revenues with their massive TV deals as part of La Liga no longer continuing to exist. This would mean that Barca will no longer continue to be the superpower in Europe that they are now and may see their players leave the club.

Catalans has been calling for their independence from Spain and prominent footballing figures like Guardiola, Xavi and Pique has publicly supported the movement much to the irk of Spanish football fans. Even Barcelona football fans have called for this division to happen and they chant in the 17th minute of every Barcelona game in reference to the year 1714 when the region last had complete autonomy.

LFP president Javier Tebas tweeted on Monday, 'If Spain splits, La Liga will have to split too. Let's hope that we never reach that absurd situation.'

Barcelona fans are arguing that Barcelona should be allowed to continue in La Liga even if they split, pointing to the fact that some Welsh clubs play in the English division under some agreement. They also hope that if that doesn't happen, their team will be granted a place in the French Ligue 1, due to the huge amount of TV rights and sponsorship deals that Barca can guarantee.
