The rise of Hector Bellerin

Hector Bellerin was provided another opportunity to showcase his talent on the biggest stage on Tuesday night and he didn't disappoint. Against Bayern Munich, Bellerin had to face the mighty Douglas Costa, and although he struggled initially, he recovered well and even provided an assist in the injury time of the match.

Arsenal were massive underdogs for the game against Bayern and with the German giants on a 12 match winning run, it was going to be a tough game for Arsenal. Two of Bayern's most dangerous attacking threats were Douglas Costa and Robert Lewandowsky. And credit must be given to Arsenal's defence for stifling them.

And Arsenal's right back Hector Bellerin had a major role in that, facing Douglas Costa one on one on several occasions over the game. In the first half, Bellerin was roasted by Costa, who constantly ran past him and nutmegged him. And for a normal 20 year old right back, such a half of football must be daunting.

But Bellerin is no normal 20 year old. He came back to the game stronger in the second half. So strong that Costa was forced to switch flanks. And after playing for 93 minutes, running up and down that right flank, he still had the power in him to burst past Thiago Alcantara to set up Ozil for the second goal. Bellerin showed that he is no pushover and Wenger was delighted with his performance.

Bellerin knows that he has Mathieu Debuchy knocking on the door for a first team spot behind him. He cannot have a dip in performance as it will be difficult for him to reclaim his spot once he loses it. But so far the Spaniard has been very consistent for Arsenal.

Bellerin joined Arsenal at the age of 16 from Barcelona, like Cesc Fabregas, in search of first team football. He had an unsuccessful loan spell at Watford but he continued to impress for the youth teams of Arsenal.

Bellerin was thrust in to the first team after an injury crisis last year, against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. He was given a torrid time there , but with his personality, he came back stronger after that. He was given a run of games in the first team after Debuchy's injury and he performed so well that Wenger chose to play him over Debuchy even after the Frenchman returned from injury.

The highlight of Bellerin's season must undoubtedly have been the goal he scored against Liverpool, curling an effort past Mignolet. His strong showings earned him a starting spot in Arsenal's FA Cup winning team against Aston Villa as well.

Bellerin has continued his form into the new season, and is now leading the European charts for most clear cut chances created ahead of all the big name players. Bellerin has unmatched pace, and is said to be the fastest player at Arsenal. He makes intelligent runs and gets forward whenever possible. The accuracy of his crossing is brilliant for a 20 year old.

Bellerin is a professional and down to earth guy and has been focusing on his work despite all the media attention he is getting and he is already a fans' favourite at the Emirates. He has already faced some of the best wingers in the game in Eden Hazard and Douglas Costa and he must be practicing against Alexis Sanchez in training daily. That surely will help him mature to a better defender pretty quickly.

Arsenal have a real gem in their ranks in the form of Bellerin, and if they can keep hold of him, he can be the best in the world .
