4. Louis van Gaal - £7.3 million

Manchester United procured the services of Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2014 following the sack of the beleaguered David Moyes. The Dutchman signed a three year contract worth £7.3 million a year.

Van Gaal helped the club finish fourth in his first year at United, three places and six points above where United finished the previous season. 

The fourth place finish secured Champions League football for the Mancunians who qualified for the group stages by beating Belgian outfit Club Brugge 7-1 on aggregate.

The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager has confirmed that he will retire from the game after his spell at United ends at the end of the 2016-17 season.
