Chelsea have recently submitted their plan to build a new 60,000 seat stadium at Stamford Bridge. The plan would involve the demolition of the old stadium which has a capacity of around 41800 and also the other buildings on the site.
Initially around 2012, Abramovich was considering a move to a new place as a permanent home for the club but the plan did not work out due to the lack of any suitable sites and also the move to Battersea Power Station being rejected. Hence, it was decided that the old stadium would be redeveloped. The stadium was last redeveloped in the 1990s.
The club has put forth the fact that the new stadium would be equipped with better facilities and would improve the atmosphere along with its viewing. It is a known fact that the current stadium of Chelsea has a lesser capacity than many of the Premier league teams, let alone the European heavyweights. However, in this age where the broadcasting revenues for the Premier league are at an all time high, the possibility of match day revenues providing a significant contribution to the finances is doubtful.
A huge stadium would put the Chelsea on par with the best in the Premier League as well as Europe. However, there is also a possibility that this may just slow down the growth of the club in the current scenario. Arsenal's drought in terms of trophies is the best reminder of what the club has to sacrifice in order to achieve this feat.
From a long term point of view, this would be a great decision for all those involved at Chelsea. It can also be argued that Chelsea may not be affected like Arsenal considering the fact that it would be Abramovich who would be financing the stadium. However, this would be a great risk for the club who has largely enjoyed short term success.
At times in his tenure as an owner, Abramovich has been hesitant in splashing cash. No one would blame him if he does it again considering the huge amount of outlay he would be putting for the stadium, reported to be around 500 million pounds. Do Chelsea have the right owner and the right manager in Mourinho to forego the short term success in order to achieve success in the long term? However, being already behind the likes of United, Arsenal , Newcastle, Manchester City and even Sunderland for that matter, it may just be the perfect time for Chelsea.
